For more than a decade, SUNBEAMsystem has driven the development of marine solar panels with a clear focus on real-life use on board. Tough G8 is the core model for anyone who wants high efficiency, long service life, and a clean, premium look – and it’s also available in an IQ version for users who want added built-in intelligence.

With 22.6% efficiency, Tough G8 delivers a lot of power per square metre, building on high-quality Maxeon\Sunpower cell technology. Compared with simpler black panels, you get both more energy and a more uniform deep-black surface that really elevates the look of your boat.

The core is the 5D8 – the eighth generation of the Tough series’ five-dimensional technology evolution – where every layer, from the new G8 surface to the composite sandwich core and internal cabling, is optimized for high output, low losses, and long life in demanding marine environments. At the same time, Shadow Optimized ensures the panel continues to deliver energy even under partial shading, while reducing long-term stress on the cells.

In the IQ version, integrated microprocessor-based functions add an extra layer of protection and optimization at panel level. The result is more stable energy production in changing on-board conditions — without changing the Tough design or installation approach.

With Shadow Optimized–IQ, a microchip built into the panel takes over the job normally handled by bypass diodes. The result is higher real-world efficiency, reduced energy losses and automatic shade management, whether your array is wired in series or in parallel.

By replacing traditional silicon bypass diodes, Shadow Optimized–IQ removes the weakest link in an otherwise robust construction. Diodes are well known for failing under heat, over-current, over-voltage and electrical spikes – all of which are everyday realities for solar panels on a yacht. When a diode fails, the panel will, sooner or later, fail with it – often without any obvious explanation to the owner. Our microchip-based solution is not only more efficient; it is also, compared with diodes, far more robust and effectively fail-safe in normal operation.

Shadow Optimized–IQ eliminates that vulnerability by replacing diodes with fully potted micro-electronics designed to handle shading events intelligently. The panel still uses Flushed Soft Junction – an invisible, design-protected cable exit with no loose cables across the deck – and all electronics are fully encapsulated for maximum service life in a harsh marine environment.

Essential in series strings

Protects shaded cells under partial shading, where they would otherwise run hot and suffer a dramatically shortened service life – or, in the worst case, create localised hot-spots.

A major benefit in parallel systems

Especially on yachts and motorhomes, where partial shading is a fact of life. The IQ microchips react instantly to shade that would otherwise, over time, begin to compromise even a parallel-connected panel.

For maximum energy yield and long service life we always recommend parallel connection. If your battery voltage forces you into a series string – or you are considering a regulator with a high start-up threshold or one mainly optimized for series arrays – you are better off choosing a regulator designed around parallel installations afloat, such as SUNBEAMsystem Moonray.

Benefits of a rigid core

Soft panels wear out and lose performance more quickly due to the daily, repeated expansion and contraction that solar panels experience. Adding a metal plate is not a sustainable solution either, as differing expansion between metal and plastic leads to delamination.

Flushed Soft Junction

SUNBEAMsystem has been a pioneer in Soft Junction technology for more than ten years. The latest and most seamless design is unique and design-protected. The cabling has also been refined – the Flush cable can be glued on the outside or routed through a hole beneath the panel for a completely invisible, cable-free installation.

Comparison of Models and Solar Cells

We use only premium cells from Maxeon\Sunpower, which are top of the line and provide much better performance than Maxeon\Sunpower’s lower-cost alternatives. They are essential for enabling our solar panels to perform at the highest level. The table below compares different models (with explanations of each factor underneath in the original documentation).

Lifetime

Assesses how well the panel tolerates varying conditions, especially partial shading. High-quality Maxeon\Sunpower cells are less sensitive to such conditions and therefore achieve a longer lifespan. Tips for Maximizing Your Solar Panels’ Performance

  • Install the panels in unshaded locations and use multiple panels to cover larger surfaces.
  • Choose black panels if you want to combine them with our Tough Black-Hole solution – this not only improves the aesthetics but also makes it easier to utilise large areas.

For boats and motorhomes, parallel connection is recommended, as it offers the best performance and helps maintain panel lifetime. Use one or more MPPT charge regulators, such as Moonray, which are optimized to maximize the efficiency of parallel-connected panels (for both single panels and panel groups) – especially Moonray with Shadow Optimized – WeatherMAX technology.

This panel is designed for parallel connection. If, for any reason, you need a different setup, we recommend Moonray BOOST or our Tough-IQ panels.

Upgrading to SMART LITHIUM LiFePO4 batteries reduces energy losses during charging and discharging, providing a quick and effective upgrade to your electrical system.

Product Information

The Tough G8 series is designed without eyelets and is supplied with a separate sheet of double-sided 3M VHB tape, including an extra primer sheet for the flexible cable connection.

Mounting with 3M VHB not only provides a convenient installation method – it also significantly extends the panel’s service life. If you choose a different installation method, you must carefully follow the manual and use only certified sealants listed there for correct application.

The included installation manual provides detailed instructions for both mechanical mounting and electrical connections, as well as information on how to register the product to apply for extended warranty.
