Minimized "Vampire Drain"
Traditional lead-acid batteries are a century-old technology, surprisingly found in today’s cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs). They power 12V systems including onboard computers, wipers, and lights, as these components are designed for older vehicles and are readily available and because of that are not upgraded to be EV-specific.
The 12V battery is drained by many systems working while the car is parked, resulting in a periodical need to charge the 12V battery by draining the main battery. However, lead-acid batteries exhibit significant energy loss during both charging and discharging. Lead-acid batteries will simply consume and lose this energy all the time it is in use.
This is often called the “vampire drain”.
You will notice it as the decrease in the main (traction) battery’s state of charge when parked overnight. For example, the main battery might be at 50% when you leave the car. While the day after it is at a mere 48%.
By upgrading to a modern battery, this drain is substantially reduced.
